Terms of Service

What Morning Bell is

Morning Bell reads your school's learning management system (Canvas, by Instructure) with a read-only access token you create and give us, and sends you one email every morning: what's due today and tomorrow, verified overdue work, new grades, grade movement, and professor announcement summaries. That's the product. Using it means you agree to these terms.

The accuracy promise — and its limits

Our whole reason to exist is being careful with claims. Before the brief uses the word "overdue," we check your own submission record for that assignment. Work that Canvas can't fully see — external tools, proctored exams, on-paper work — is labeled as unverifiable ("check these"), never called overdue. When we can't check, we say so.

And still: we can be wrong. Canvas data can be stale, professors change deadlines without updating Canvas, integrations break, and an email that leaves our servers at 6 AM can't know what changed at 6:05. The brief is a smart summary of what Canvas said when we looked — it is not the authoritative record of your obligations. Your deadlines are your responsibility. Verify anything that matters in Canvas itself, and never rely on the absence of an item in a brief as proof that nothing is due. A missed assignment, exam, or deadline is on you, even if a brief was wrong, late, or never arrived.

We are read-only

Morning Bell makes zero write calls to your school's systems: it cannot submit, post, message, change, or delete anything on your behalf. The complete list of API calls we make is published on the privacy page and generated from our actual code.

Your account and your token

• You must be an enrolled student (or otherwise authorized user) of the school account you connect, and at least 18 years old — Morning Bell is not directed at children.
• Connect only your own LMS account, with a token you created yourself. Never paste someone else's token, and never share yours with anyone — including us, outside the signup flow.
• Your token is encrypted the moment it arrives and stored in a secrets vault (details on the privacy page). You can revoke it in your school's Canvas settings at any time, which cuts off all our access instantly.
• Check your school's policies: creating an access token for a third-party tool is normally a student's right in Canvas, but your institution's acceptable-use rules are yours to follow.

Acceptable use

Don't abuse the service: no automated signups, no probing or load-testing our endpoints, no using Morning Bell to collect data about anyone but yourself, no reselling or white-labeling the briefs. We may throttle, pause, or close accounts that threaten the service or other users — abuse of a small free service hurts the actual students using it.

Price

Morning Bell is free. If it ever costs money, it will be a price you see and choose in advance — nothing retroactive, no surprise charges, and you'll be able to walk away first.

Leaving, or being asked to leave

You can stop any time: one-tap unsubscribe pauses all sending instantly, and the delete your account page erases everything we hold. We can also terminate or suspend the service (for everyone, or for an account violating these terms) — if we ever shut down for good, we'll email you first and delete the data. Deletion works exactly as the privacy page describes.

No warranty, limited liability

Morning Bell is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied — including fitness for a particular purpose and non-interruption. We do not warrant that briefs will be accurate, complete, or on time. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Andersen Labs LLC's total liability for any claim arising out of the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim (currently: zero dollars), and we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages — including missed deadlines, grades, academic standing, or lost opportunities. Some jurisdictions don't allow certain limitations, so parts of this may not apply to you.

Not affiliated with your school or Instructure

Morning Bell is an independent product of Andersen Labs LLC. It is not endorsed by, affiliated with, or supported by Instructure, Canvas, or any school. "Canvas" and "Instructure" are trademarks of Instructure, Inc., used here only to describe what the product connects to.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Nevada, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes belong to the state or federal courts located in Clark County, Nevada — though we'd rather you just email us first; almost everything is fixable in one reply.

Changes

If these terms ever change materially, you get an email before the change takes effect, written in the same plain English. Continuing to receive briefs after that is acceptance; unsubscribing or deleting your account is always the no-hard-feelings alternative.
